Learning to drive can be a nervous experience, but the scariest part can be overthinking little details you might not know about. So, use this as a guide before you jump in the car.
You can always speak to your teacher beforehand if you have any small queries that are causing you confusion, they’ve heard it all so will be happy to help, no matter how silly the question seems in your head.
First Introductions
A lot of the time, meeting your instructor can be the leading cause of anxiety. But you’ve got to remember they’re human just like you! It’s very possible that they’ve been doing this for a long time so they’ll be very approachable and happy to help you on your journey.
You can take time to explain to your teacher what issues you’ve got before, during and after your lessons and they’ll aid you. Remember, their job is to teach you.
Perhaps the first time you’re meeting your teacher is on the actual lesson itself. That’s absolutely normal. When they first pull up and you know it’s your teacher, just approach the vehicle and introduce yourself, before sitting in the passenger seat.
It’s likely that your teacher will not want you to drive immediately after being picked up, instead they may take you somewhere safe to run through some drills. If you’re unsure of what to expect on the first lesson then you can always research the drills beforehand, but your teacher will run everything by you on the day.
Respecting The Vehicle
As well as respecting your teacher, you also want to treat the car with the same level of respect. After all, you are only a guest in this car. Imagine it the same way as if you were in someone’s home, you wouldn’t bring any outside food without permission (A bottle of water is of course fine).
They will also have their own car mats or even personalised car mats, perhaps with their own logo on it. Reputable businesses such as Mr Car Mats have a history of supplying quality car mats to drivers who own their own business or work as drivers, such as driving instructors. So, make sure your shoes are clean and mud-free when entering the vehicle; you want to leave the car the same way you found it.
Have Fun With It Safely
There is always one bit of advice driving instructors will tell you. “Have fun with it.” This is important as you don’t want to get bogged down on the logistics of it all. Of course, you need to be safe but your teacher will tell you about the importance of relaxing when driving, a key safety topic. There’s plenty of advice they will tell you on the day and beforehand to cater to your needs.
